3.25.11 - Battle Engines!

With the release of No Quarter Issue #35, I really wanted to go through and analyze all of the new releases that were spoiled inside!  I was so excited to see the rules of the Gun Carriage, and was pleasantly surprised as to how powerful the Gun Carriage is.  And now, with today's Privateer Insider, we have more Battle Engine goodness!

First of all, we have the Khador Gun Carriage.  The first thing that surprised me was that it has SPD 7!  The second thing, and it too me a while to realize this, is that it has the Cavalry benefit!  The rest is all icing on the cake.  Two heavy cannons, with RNG 12, AOE 4, POW 14, leaving rough terrain? Awesome!  POW 12 Mount with auto-knockdown?  Even better.

So, a little bit of analyzation.  This guy can charge, knockdown with the mount/impact attacks, then blow the crap out of pretty much anything in your path.  With SPD 7, he's charging 10", something your Khador 'jacks will be jealous of.  With his Heavy Cannons, the Gun Carriage can neutralize opponent heavy 'jacks by making a lot of rough terrain.  Oh, and by the way, did I mention Gun Carriages can trample?  At 9 points, 22 points of damage, and ARM 20, this guy is a steal.

There are two warcasters that come to mind when I think of helping the Gun Carriage.  The first is Strakhov.  He's got Occultation, which is surprisingly useful on a Battle Engine.  Because your opponent can pretty much always draw line of sight to the Gun Carriage, it can almost always get shot at.  Not so with Occultation.  Next up is Sentry.  Getting to shoot ANOTHER cannon shot at an advancing enemy?  Yes, please.  And finally, Strakhov's feat helps the Gun Carriage go from really fast to insanely fast.  Under the feat, the Gun Carriage will charge 14"!

Second up is pVlad.  Everyone loves Signs and Portents.  The Gun Carriage obviously loves it too.  Boundless Charge also gets him up their faster than normal.

For the most part, the rest of the warcasters (save for pButcher) only help warrior models or battlegroup, of which Battle Engines are neither.

Next up is the Retribution Arcantrik Force Generator!  Now, let's review the front of the card before we move onto the back.  SPD 4, RAT 7, ARM 19, with a RNG 14, POW 14. He'll be RAT 9 with the aiming bonus.  20 points of damage, FA 2, PC 10.  When you put this guy side by side with the Gun Carriage, the front of the card just looks barren.  But there's plenty on the back to satisfy.

First thing is that this guy can't be charged from the front arc.  While this guy IS ARM 19, with 20 damage boxes, you don't want it to get charged by a group of Bane Thralls.  Second, and what this guy has on the Gun Carriage, is that he can forfeit movement for aiming bonus AND +2 RNG.  Also, if you have jacks shooting B2B with the Generator, and the Generator got the aiming bonus, those myrmidons also get +2 RNG.

Last of all are the attack types.  The first increases the POW to 16 and gives the attack AOE 4.  So, with this attack, we have a RAT 9, RNG 16, AOE 4, POW 16.  That's what I like to see.  Second up, we have Momentum, a la Trollbloods Thumper Crew.  This can easily enable the assassination via ranged attacks from the rest of the army.  Last of all, we have a simple Rapid Fire of d3+1 attacks.  The good news is that none of these are special attacks or actions.

In terms of warcasters, Ravyn and Garryth come to mind.  I think this guy will be a huge assassin piece in a Ravyn ranged assassination list by starting it all of with a knocked down caster.  Then Ravyn charges into melee with the warcaster, Vortexing it up, then letting Mage Hunters (of any variety) finish of the warcaster, in case Ravyn couldn't do it herself.

Garryth has Apparition, which can give the Force Generator exactly what it needs to fix it's only weakness, it's SPD.  Every turn, it can move 2" and still gain the aiming bonus.

Last up we have the concept art for the Circle Orboros Battle Engine, the Celestial Fulcrum!  AHHH!!  Circle is my main faction, and I was soooo excited to see this on the front page.  If they can replicate that concept art in a model, that just might be the most impressive model that Privateer Press has.

I guess the biggest question on people's minds about this is:  is it an attacking piece or a support piece?  Is it going to be a giant Shifting Stone, or a super Geomancer.

My guess is that it's a little of both.  I think it will be able to help your army, while being able to do a death star laser.

Well there you have it, the reviews of all the current information on Battle Engines!
