Each item has one other item it will beat, and another it will lose to. However, that's not saying that there isn't skill in playing the game. But despite which item you use, they are all equal in power. Warmachine is similar.

While Warmachine can never be as balanced as Rock Paper Scissors, there are many elements in the game that work similarly. For example, a Khador Juggernaut is good at killing warjacks/warbeasts. Now that's more like Rock beats Rock, except that the second rock isn't always as good at fighting back.

Warmachine is far more complicated than Rock Paper Scissors. It's more like Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock. The point I'm trying to make here is there are several things you need to prepare for when building lists.

Rock beats Rock?
The two most important things to prepare for when building a list (this should be obvious) is a way to kill heavy warjacks/warbeasts, hopefully in one turn, and a way to kill a good amount of infantry. These things can come in a wide variety of solutions. For example, a unit of Bane Thralls are fully capable of killing a warjack while they might struggle at killing a lot of models in a unit. Thunderhead might be capable of clearing a large area of infantry while having trouble taking down a warjack. On the other hand, the more traditional solution to killing warjacks is with warjacks, and infantry killing other infantry.

Lizard poisons Spock
Here is where a lot of subtleties to list building come in. One of the reasons Warmachine is such a balanced game is that everything has it's Paper and it's Scissors. In other words, there is always something that your opponent can bring that will counter some cool things in your army. A good example of this is Lich Lord Asphyxious (eGaspy). There are many, many posts in the PP Forums about this warcaster and how he's so powerful. However, if his opponent is Captain Victoria Haley (pHaley), he will have a very hard time being effective at all. Furthermore, pHaley's spell, Temporal Barrier essentially means that eGaspy doesn't have a feat. The point I'm trying to make is that everything has a counter.

There are several things after warjacks and infantry that players can plan for. These are different, however, because some of these things depend on local meta (essentially what other players tend to bring). A short, but by no means exhaustive, list of these things would be: stealth infantry, high ARM infantry, heavy infantry (multi-wound infantry eg. Man-o-wars), high DEF infantry, buffing (beneficial) upkeeps, debuffing (harmful) upkeeps, or eEiryss. There are counters to all of these things, and most of the time each faction has access to each counter.

Putting it to Practice
I'll just go ahead and share a list I have been working on and give some reasons for some of the selections I have made.

pKreuger
-Feral Warpwolf
-Gorax
-Woldwarden
-Woldwarden
Druids
-UA
Wolves of Orboros
-UA
Wolf Lord Morraig
Blackclad Wayfarer

First of all, I chose pKreuger for his ability to shred through large amounts of infantry, both on feat turn and not. I thought that because of his infantry killing, I could afford to go a little heavier on the beast side. I chose the Feral, because he's a solid beatstick, with MAT 7, and he's a great Lightning Tendrils target (gives Reach and Electro Leap). I took the Gorax for his animus and his ability to kill a light given the need. I opted for two Woldwardens for maximum Geomancy. They really only have two spells they can cast, but those two spells are amazing. Instead of needing pKreuger to be casting Chain Lightning all the time, the Wolds can do it, and leave Kreuger with Fury to cast Skyborne and Deflection. That's it for the battlegroup.

The Druids are a meta choice, in my opinion. What I mean by that is this: their usefulness depends on what your opponent will likely bring. If your opponent has a lot of offensive spells or elemental attacks (read: Cryx or Legion, respectively), the Druids will be very effective. However, against some other choices, they might not be as effective for their high point cost. Some people would rather just have another offensive unit. I chose the Wolves because they are quick, cheap, and also amazing Lightning Tendrils targets. While they won't benefit from Reach, they sure love the Electro Leap and the Electrical Immunity. They become good targets for starting Chain Lightning if you're fighting stealth units. Not to mention the fact that they can tear a unit to shreds with MAT 8 on a charge and an auto-hitting Electro Leap attack. Next is Morraig, who hits like a truck. He really likes to charge non-Reach warjacks, rip them in half, and laugh as they can't kill him next turn. Finally we have the Blackclad, who is another good target to Chain Lightning from. He is also great for his magical spray and Hunters Mark.

So there you have it. Just a crazy man's ramblings in the middle of the night.eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-3020482659417576252011-06-15T01:00:00.000-07:002011-06-15T01:00:59.646-07:00First Impressions About Wrath

Having procured the new expansion for Warmachine, Wrath, I will try and give some ideas and first impressions about some of the Wrath models, as well as some (intentional or not) common trends about the new releases.

Many thanks to Jason Flanzer and his creative genius, as we spent a few hours chatting today about Wrath. He surely has credit for some of the ideas I'll be talking about, but I'm unsure of which ones.

First of all, I'm really pleased of the power level of the new warcasters. With some of the most underwhelming warcasters that MkII brought, I had mixed thoughts about what the Wrath warcasters would be able to do. However, I think the Wrath casters are pretty incredible, while being something completely new to each respective faction. I also believe that each Wrath warcaster has the potential to be powerhouses in higher levels. I'm sure we will see most of the Wrath casters at Gencon and future conventions.

Second, I think that Wrath brought a LOT of anti infantry, most importantly in non-infantry form. Some people might have noticed, but the only units that are in the Wrath book are the Kayazy Eliminators, the Houseguard Heavy Rifle Team, and the Ogrun Assault Corps. I think it's pretty commonly accepted that infantry heavy lists are very prevalent. I love the fact that Wrath brought a lot of non-infantry infantry killers. If you need some examples, here's a few: Avenger Cannon, Shatter Storm on Ossyan, Broadsides, Daemon gun, most Battle Engines, Demolisher, Minuteman Flak Field, etc.

On a side note, I'm glad to see a few more instances of "remove from play" (RFP).

Defying Expectations
There are a few things that I expected to be in Wrath that weren't. There are also a few things that were in Wrath that I didn't expect.

I was expecting Mercs to get a couple more releases. I guess they "got" Constance and Gallant, but they only got 6 releases compared to the 8-10 that the regular factions got. I was expecting/hoping that Retribution was going to get a character unit and maybe a support solo.

I wasn't expecting all of the warcasters to be so awesome! I wasn't expecting all of the warjacks to be so cool, and surprisingly unique from the other warjacks in their factions. I didn't expect the Kayazy Eliminators!

Well, I think that's it for tonight. Feel free to post your first impressions of Warmachine: Wrath and any ideas of crazy combos you might come up with!eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-73042206145135842972011-06-10T16:03:00.002-07:002011-06-10T16:04:33.900-07:00Wrath Spoilers!

I'm just going to make this a quick post. Adeptis Rahn is a premier, FOC 8, spell focused warcaster for Retribution, who supports his army as well as being a strong spell caster.

Throughout the course of this tactics article, I'll try and cover Rahn's strengths and weaknesses as well as offer up some insight into how he plays.

First off, let's take a look at what Rahn can do. He's SPD 5, but won't have to worry about keeping up with his army too much because he has FOC 8. He's got an average defense of 14 with a higher than average ARM 16, letting him camp up to ARM 24. His Force Barrier makes him DEF 16 from ranged attacks, so he's generally pretty hardy given the right circumstances. Beat Back on his weapon is situationally useful for when you need to get up close enough to do some spell casting yourself, such as on a Stealthed caster.

Spells

Chain Blast - a VERY useful spell for clearing infantry, especially on the feat turn. This is also a good spell for doing damage against a warcaster if you're trying to go for the assassination.
Force Blast - a situational spell. I would mostly use this to clear up the Phoenix if your opponent ran to engage and prevent spell arcing. This could also be used to push an enemy warcaster closer to what will be able to kill it, but will take a lot of effort to pull this off.
Force Field - an awesome upkeep I always cast on turn 1. The ability to choose deviation direction is so solid, especially when playing with minimal Battle Mages, or against models that have any continual effect attached to their AoE (here's looking at you, eFeora bonded Redeemer!).
Force Hammer (I'm seeing a trend in spell names) - the premier starter to an assassination run. This spell under the feat turn can very reliably knock down enemy warcasters allowing the rest of your army to chip away at them. Follow up with an eEiryss shot, pulling with Battle Mage Force Bolts, and finish them off with a Phoenix or Fane Knight to the face.
Polarity Shield - A great denial spell. This spell prevents a unit from being charged in the front arc. I generally like to use this on the Mage Hunter Strike Force. This is also useful on warjacks or Rahn himself.
Telekinesis - Rahn's premier spell. This spell has so many different uses and possibilities. Use it on your own models to extend their threat range. Use it on your own models to get them out of melee. Use it on your opponent models to get them closer to you. Use it on your opponent models to face them away from you, allowing the rest of your army to hit in the back arc. Most of my assassination runs happen by casting TK, Force Hammering, and TKing the Phoenix or Fane Knight closer to the caster.

The Feat
Rahn's feat is really what makes Rahn Rahn. He gives boosted magic attack and damage rolls to all models in his control area (including himself), and boosts the range of non-channeled spells by +2 RNG. Most of the time, I pop his feat on a turn I plan to assassinate my opponents warcaster.

The List
Most of the time, a Rahn list will include a few things. Phoenix, Battle Mages, and Magisters are very very common.

Phoenix - The Retribution heavy Arc Node. He also happens to be a monster in melee with a Concentrated Power from an Arcanist. He also has auto-fire on his sword, crit-fire on his ranged weapon, a regenerating shield, and a combined total of 34 damage boxes. Oh, and not to mention he can blow up and kill a ton of infantry. All around a very very solid warjack. His only drawback is that he's 10 points.

Battle Mages - Rahn's favorite infantry. They can facilitate a lot of assassinations with their fully boosted Force Bolts. They can also kill two infantry models per Mage with 2 MAT 6 P+S 11s. They are also very hard to kill from range, being DEF 15 from range and immune to blast damage. An all around versatile unit that Rahn helps greatly with his feat and spells.

Magister - An awesome utility solo. He has Force Bolt, like the Battle Mages, but he also has Whip Snap, which let's a friendly model within 3" advance 3" on hit. This can set up a Phoenix charge, or clear up a charge lane. He also has Combo Smite, letting him slam big stuff over smaller stuff, knocking it down, enabling the rest of your army to kill it.

Example List
Adeptis Rahn
-Phoenix
The idea behind this list is to have an insane amount of ways to get to the opponent warcaster, as well as a lot of models capable of killing a warcaster.

Well, I just ran out of steam. There's all my ideas for now about Rahn. Feel free to leave comments and questions.eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-72877385599028236672011-06-07T01:16:00.000-07:002011-06-07T01:16:20.369-07:00Hardcore: A Review

Having just attended the wonderful Privateer Weekend at Diecon in St. Louis, I think it's a perfect time for me to talk about the Hardcore format. Also, I'm glad to be back blogging after a long and unintentional hiatus! Most of my Warmahordes time in the past little while was in preparation for Hardcore, and the rest is attributed to laziness. Without further adieu, my first blog post in a month and a half!

For those of you who don't know, the Hardcore format is as follows:

-50 point list, one list only
-7 minute turns and (generally) 60 min rounds.
-Fully painted army following the Hardcore Painting Requirement in SR2011
-Killbox scenario only (also included in SR2011 with link above)

In preparation for Hardcore, first I came up with a list that I thought would be competitive, I could paint, and wouldn't break the bank. Here's what I came up with.

Adeptis Rahn
-Discordia
-Phoenix

Arcanist x2
eEiryss
Fane Knight
Artificer
Battle Mages
Magister x2
Madelyn Corbeau
Mage Hunter Assassin
Mage Hunter Strike Force
-UA
Narn

The idea behind the list was to have so many vectors to get to an opponent that I could reliably get the caster kill. In retrospect, this army was pretty easy to paint, and was average cost for a 50 point army, because there were so many cheap solos.

In terms of play, this army performed exactly how it was supposed to... against people who didn't really know what Rahn could do. Against more experienced players, who know what Rahn can do, my army didn't really have the staying power or sheer amount of attacks to kill enough things.

Planning for future Hardcores

A lot of lists that did well at Diecon were a lot of unconventional lists. They also had a lot of things that could be very tough to kill. While always being aware of assassination vectors is very important, a Hardcore list should also be able to kill a lot of different things. Some things that I will plan for in the future will be:

-Light infantry
-Heavy infantry
-Multiple heavy beasts/jacks

Of course, this is a pretty straightforward idea, but at times difficult to pull off. Taking flexible units is always a good idea, especially because of the One List Only format of Hardcore. For example, Dawnguard Invictors are an extremely versatile unit because: they have good melee weapons and good MAT, they have good ranged weapons at MAT 6, they have CRA allowing them to take down heavier targets with rerolling to hit, they have ARM 17 when B2B. So they could do single shots or charge in to kill light infantry, they could do 2 or 3 man CRA's to crack heavy infantry, or they could do an 11 man CRA to do some serious damage to a warjack or warbeast.

Well, I think that's it for now. I'm sure there are a lot of other things I could talk about on the subject of Hardcore, but I am tired. If I can get around to it, I'll take some pics of my Hardcore army and post them in the near future.eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-21996938498187841842011-04-20T17:59:00.000-07:002011-04-20T17:59:43.091-07:004.20.11 - Ossyan, Thyra, Unbound, and new Theme Forces!

Yesterday and today brought some pretty exciting news for Warmachine. The model for the new Protectorate warcaster, Thyra, Flame of Sorrow, was announced, as well as the model for Lord Arcanist Ossyan for the Retribution. Privateer Insider announced a new large-scale rule set for Warmachine, called Unbound. Finally, the cover for No Quarter #36 was announce on No Quarter's Facebook page.

I think of all of the Wrath warcasters, I am most interested in Ossyan, with Thyra being a close second. That might be because I play Retribution, but come on, "The fundamental laws of reality twist and shatter beneath the will of Ossyan"? Sweet!

Oh what I wouldn't give to get Temporal Barrier or Temporal Acceleration on this guy. He will probably have some way to help out dice, whether it is Manifest Destiny, Signs and Portents, Seas of Fate, Future Sight, or some new ability. If he does, he'll go straight to top tier in my opinion.

And I love his Megaman arm.

Now this warcaster is really exciting as well. She will probably have either Elite Cadre [Daughters] or Desperate Pace. It seems like she will be a Morghoul type in your face warcaster. Possibly FOC 5, but with potent spells, I think she'll support Daughters and maybe other infantry. I'm thinking she'll have Side Step, Perfect Balance, Anatomical Precision, and hopefully DEF 17. I don't think it would break precedence. Gun Mages are DEF 15 and both Caines are DEF 17. Daughters are DEF 15 so why not?

By the way, what a great pose.

Unbound, new Theme Forces, and the final Wrath previews.

In today's Privateer Insider, Jason Soles announced Unbound, which is a ruleset for large-scale Warmachine battles. This ruleset is designed for 150+ points with three or more warcasters. The biggest difference coming to Unbound is how turns and rounds work. In a single round, each player will take turns activating portions of their armies. Similar to GW's Lord of the Rings game, players roll for initiative to see who gets to activate first. However, to prevent two units/sections for going two times in a row, The units that activated last in the previous round may not activate first in the current round.

Jason included his belief that this is not for everyone, nor is it intended for competitive play. I know some players who just love playing huge games, and this will probably be their thing. I, for one, will definitely give Unbound a try when it comes out at the end of next month.

Finally, on the cover we see that both Legion of Everblight and Mercenaries are on the chopping block for getting new Theme Forces. Who's gonna get them? Beats me.

Furthermore, our favorite Japanese supplier, malefic.jp, spoiled the July releases for Privateer Press.

Wow, what a great model! Defying all expectations, he turned out to be a medium base model, despite coming in a box. With chainsaw scythe, steam vents galore, and even a spiffy cape to boot, he'll be all the hotness with the ladies.

Here are a few guesses based on the model and the blurb.

- On his weapon, P+S 14, Sustained Attack, Critical Shred.
- ARM 15 or 16, with a special soul collecting system. My guess would be super cull soul, where he can have up to 5 souls on him, and can choose to convert those souls to focus during his activation. Also will have Ghost Shield (a la Wurmwood).
- Possibly spend a soul token or focus to get +2 SPD for a round (from the "ammunition and fuel" part of the blurb).

Blood of Martyrs?! Possibly a character Vanquisher, in keeping with the trend of Character heavies for the new casters. However, a character Dervish would fit the theme for the Daughters of the Flame warcaster, Thyra. But that's just an upgrade kit, so it will most likely be a heavy.

For Erebus, the only warjack from the plastic kit that doesn't have a character is the Corrupter. But from the Wrath cover picture, we can tell that he just has two Open Fists. So he's another character Slayer. Which isn't a bad thing.

Scattergunner Officer and Standard! With sprays being as powerful as they are in MkII, anything that makes sprays better is going to be awesome. I think that the SP 10 minifeat from the Cleanser Officer would be sweet with these guys. Reform would be insanely good with the Scattergunners.

Minion Targ Character Solo?! Sweet. My guess is he'll be a supporty solo, possibly even a warlock attachment for Farrow. If you are lucky enough to have the Legion of Everblight book, check out page 8, paragraphs 5 and 6 for a short blurb on who Targ is. He is actually Farrow, meaning he's a pig. However, a deformed leg and spine prevent him from fighting, so he helps Dr. Arkadius out with surgery and other menial tasks.

I think the rest are all pretty much old news. Except for maybe the release timeframe for the Storm Strider.

So you have a bunch of games under your belt. You are probably now realizing that you are just now starting to learn how to play the game. Here, I will discuss some things you can do to speed up the learning process after gaining a basic mastery over the game mechanics.

I read an article on the Privateer Press Forums (second paragraph) which got me thinking about this kinda thing. In the forum post, Not Dice talked about two plateaus of learning Warmahordes. The first being learning the mechanics of the game, and the second being learning The Game, or how to use the mechanics to your advantage. I will assume if you are reading this article that you have surpassed the first plateau, or are getting there soon.

Read Everything You Can
Even if you have a solid understanding of the rules, it's never a bad idea to read through the main rulebook every once in a while. Sometimes a specific model of your faction will pop into your head, and sometimes you'll learn something you didn't know before.

Read your faction book. Read it again. Read it until you can name the statline, abilities, spells, weapons, etc. of everything in the book. And then read it again. Knowing the capabilities of your own models is paramount in making an army list, and using them effectively. Sometimes it's nice just to look at the pretty pictures, though.

In my opinion, there's no worse way to lose a game than, "Your model can do what?". You can save your self a lot of grief by learning what your opponents things can do. While you might not have the resources to get all of the faction books, before you play a game, you can take a couple minutes to read your opponents cards. Of course, this won't mean that you can see all of the angles of what his things would be capable of, or the combos your opponent will pull, but you won't be ignorant of your opponents capabilities.

Play Games
There is no substitute for actual in-game experience. Play as many games as you can against as many opponents as possible. Not only can you gain experience against different factions, you can see how other people play the game. Every person has a different way of playing, even though they might use exactly the same list as another.

You can use in game experience to test the effectiveness of the army list you bring to the game. Did that solo do what you wanted it to?

Take time after the game to evaluate things you could have done better or things you did well. Why did that unit die so early?

Be Aware of Your Opponent's Threat Range
Like the title states, be aware of your opponent's threat range. Most of the time, the first half of the game is players positioning their models to charge in subsequent turns. While you can't go the whole game staying outside of your opponents threat range (if you do, that means absolutely nothing is happening, and why are you playing?), you can use this knowledge to your advantage.

There are two situations that generally come up. Your opponent is or isn't aware of how fast your things are. If your opponent isn't aware, or doesn't see the charge coming, you have an advantage and can hit him hard, first. However, if your opponent IS aware of your threat ranges, you might have to trick/force your opponent to devote too many resources to kill your things. For example, if your opponent charges your 3 point solo with his heavy warjack, you won the exchange there, because you most likely parked your heavy in counter charge range. When both players are aware of threat ranges, it becomes a matter of piece trading. But that's an article for another day.

6's and 8's

Play like you will always roll 6's and your opponent will roll 8's. I'm sure everyone knows that the expected value on 2d6 is a 7. However, as we discovered in my Mathmachine article, it's only a 58% chance of rolling a 7. That means you will not roll a seven 42% of the time. The principle behind this idea is very obvious, though. Prepare for bad dice on your part and good dice on your opponents part. Never rely on 2d6 to get you a 7. That's kind of a harsh statement, but I always boost when I need a 7, provided I have the option to boost.

Well that's all for today.
This just came out of left field. For the most part, we have heard names or seen concept art for a lot of things that are coming out in Warmachine: Wrath. However, this is the first non-spoiled Wrath release that Privateer Press has shown us!

First of all, what a paint job! I like the black paint job on this guy. It's a nice change from the regular studio paint job of Khadorian red.
Some points of interest. 8/12 Cryx casters fall in the 31 category. Every faction has a caster in the 32 category. Mercs don't have a caster lower than 30 (even then, Macbain has Unyielding for two more ARM in melee), as do Retribution. Protectorate as the most casters under 30. Protectorate is also the most widespread, having a warcaster in each category.eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-71168562862717282522011-04-07T12:52:00.000-07:002011-04-07T12:52:38.064-07:004.7.11 - Wrath Cover Picture

In today's Privateer Insider, they show the process from start to finish of how the cover art for Warmachine: Wrath came to be.

"Bloodthirsty, tough as nails, and strong enough to hack the arms off a gorax, slaughterhousers serve as vicious shock troops in farrow warbands. Heedless of danger, slaughterhouser units charge recklessly into battle, cutting a wide swath through the enemy with their massive pole cleavers and shaking off wounds that would kill or incapacitate lesser farrow."

Well this was a pleasant, yet unexpected surprise! Right off the bad, there were a few things that I wasn't expecting from these guys. First of all, they're on a small base. A lot of people were speculating medium base because of the small unit size. However, it seems like this is going to be a 'one size fits all' type of unit (a la Doom Reavers or Arcane Tempest Gun Mages).

And here goes the wild speculation:

SPD 6, STR 8, MAT 7, RAT 4, DEF 12, ARM 15, CMD 9
Tough
Berserk
Terror

Really Long Axe Thingy - POW 5, P+S 13
Reach
Take Down

FA 2
PC 6

Well, today's just a short article, I wanted to get the wonderfulness that is the Slaughterhousers out into the world! This week, I'd like to present the changes to probabilities on dice rolls caused by "drop the lowest" or "drop the highest".

There are several warcasters/warlocks in Warmahordes that modify dice rolls using feats, spells, and abilities. I'll try and cover all of them (except for Calandra's feat, because I can't figure out an easy way to calculate that!).

First of all, we'll do the most common, which is: Roll an additional dice for attack and/or damage; Drop the lowest. Both pVlad and eVlad have this, as well as eThagrosh. Just a comment on the below graphs: the V in the first column stands for Value, the second column is the probability to roll exactly the displayed value, the third column is the probability to roll the displayed value or higher.
At first glance, this guy looks pretty simple and straightforward. With SPD 7, MAT 7, P+S 11, it looks like he's supposed to be a light 'jack hunter. However, with Flight, Finisher, and access to Ghostly, this guy could possibly be the guy to kill warcasters. Another way this guy could be used is to take out pesky solos. Flight gets him where he needs to be, MAT 7 hits higher DEF (which all the pesky solos seem to have), and he has Sprint to protect himself afterwards. Take these guys in pairs, or team him up with a Stalker, and you'll have warcasters peeing their pants at the sight of you.
The only thing that this guy has different over the Sea Dog weapon attachment is that he is undead, and that he returns to play if he dies. Here's hoping that the undead pirates get another solo that buffs them up! Let's see, living pirates have 4 solos that help them out. The undead pirates have just one. That's not fair!

Despite having a black belt in search-fu, I could not come up with a picture of the Heavy Rifle Team, short of scanning it. I really like the look of this guy. RNG 14, POW 7, Armor Piercing at RAT 7 is pretty cool. Ideally, they'll be shooting at 'jacks and beasts the whole time, but for them to be effective, you need to get lucky on the dice rolls. With very few ways of boosting damage (Ravyn's Vortex of Destruction being the only way as of now), expected damage against a Khador heavy warjack is a measly four damage. Of course these guys can do more damage to light warjacks, doing an expected seven damage against bonejacks (provided they hit needing 8s).

However, one thing I'm coming to realize about Retribution solos is that they work far better in pairs. I think that is still the case with the Heavy Rifle Team. Doing an expected eight damage each turn to Khador heavies before they engage is great to soften them up and possibly take out some systems. Another possibility with these guys is to seriously threaten medium and large base warcasters/warlocks, especially in pairs, all for four points.

It's awesome! This guy is greatly different than the rest of the Battle Mages. With lower SPD and DEF, higher ARM and P+S, the Artificer is a completely different animal. I can see using all three of the spells that he has. The first spell I think is most useful at protecting those who would be most vulnerable to blast damage and ranged attacks, which would most likely be the Mage Hunter Strike Force and warcasters. The second spell, Magno Blast, at face value looks like it should be used to clump up infantry to kill with a later AOE. However, this being a mini-Hellmouth, you can use it to clear up or create charge lanes. Finally, the Polarity Field means that they can't charge you. I would see using this the least of the three spells, but it does have its occasional uses.
It's a shame that this guy isn't as good as I think he should be. The main reason that people want to take this guy is for the Death Field. However, I think that it's really hard to get the Death Field spell off. The limiting factors here are: his SPD, no Battle Wizard, limited range. His SPD, while being good, is not fast enough to keep up with charging units. Because Death Field is a *action, he can't do it and charge or run. The limited range on the Death Field means that, even if he walks up 6", Death Fields, then other guys charge in, they still might not be benefiting from Death Field. However, if Ragman had Battle Wizard, he could charge in, kill something, then Death Field for another unit to charge in afterwards and mop up.
It looks like a lot of thought went into this guy, and I think that he's great. Obviously, the +1 MAT +1 RAT is a great addition, but the abilities he brings are where it's at. First of all, he gives the unit the option of Bushwhack. I see this only situationally helpful, but when you use it, it'll be VERY useful. The second ability, Scouring Flames, is amazing. This mini-feat changes the Cleansers weapons to SP 10 POW 10. SP10 is so much better than SP8. This lets them hit a LOT more things with their sprays. Finally, we have the *action Sheet of Fire. This places a wall template completely within 5" of the Officer. Any model going through it takes a POW 12 damage roll and is set on fire. Also, as a bonus, if you are in the wall, you get concealment (while being on fire). This pretty much says NO to charging infantry. Eat THAT Bane Thralls!
After confronting Karchev, Skarre, Rasheth, and Doomshaper, Kaya emerged victorious.

So I participated in a local tournament run by Iron Agenda's Jason Flanzer (whom, if I may say, was a great TO :P). It was a mash up of 25 point Mangled Metal and Killbox scenario (to discourage running away). The tournament went four rounds. All of my opponents were great, and it was a great tournament overall.

Here was my list (if you didn't already guess).

Kaya the Moonhunter
-Laris
-Feral Warpwolf
-Pureblood Warpwolf
-Warpwolf Stalker
Karchev the Terrible
-Behemoth
-Berserker
-Decimator

This was a bit of a bad matchup, as all of my opponents shooting couldn't hit me. In turn 2, I capitalized on my feat to kill Behemoth and damage the Berserker. The next turn, my opponent misjudged the distance between the Stalker and Karchev, and the Stalker was able to charge Karchev and kill him.

Round 2

v. Skarre, Queen of the Broken Coast
-Deathjack
-Nightmare
-Seether

I was deathly afraid of the Deathjack in this list (rightly so), especially with Perdition. Because I went second, I was very afraid that Deathjack might be able to get a Perdition off turn 1 on my advance deploying heavies, so I deployed them at 14" instead of 16". In turn 2, Deathjack tried to Perdition one the Pureblood, hoping to be within 5" to hit, but was barely out. I then feated to kill the Deathjack, with the rest of the heavies too far away to reach.

My opponent then feated and ran his 'jacks up really far. I responded by surrounding Nightmare, who was preying Kaya. Next turn, Seether threw the Pureblood at Kaya, knocking her down. Nightmare took a free strike from the Stalker, killing an arm. Luckily Kaya was sitting on 4 fury, so she took 5 damage from one attack, and transferred the rest to her beasts. Next turn, the Stalker killed Skarre.
Round 3

v. -Bronzeback Titan
-Titan Gladiator
-Titan Gladiator
-Titan Gladiator

I will preface this commentary by saying that my dice were absolutely glorious this game. The average on two dice this game was 9, and on three dice it was 15.

In turn 2, I used Laris as an arcnode to put Dogpile on the Bronzeback, who was behind a big house seemingly safe from the Feral, then I feated. Here, my opponent forgot to Counter Charge Laris, which would have prevented the channel. So the Feral warped for Ghostly, charged the Bronzeback, and nearly killed it. The Stalker charged a Gladiator, killing it. The Pureblood went last, trying to kill the Bronzeback, but not enough damage (my opponent could have counter charged here as well, but forgot).

Next, Rasheth feated and repositioned his beasts. Stealth seriously hampered his offensive spell output, as well as not being able to arc through a warrior model. Next turn, the Feral finished off the Bronzeback, and I set up the Pureblood to be a piece trade. A gladiator slammed the Pureblood into the Stalker, and rolled horrendously, leaving the Pureblood alive. The Pureblood and the Stalker paired up against that Gladiator, and the Feral finished off the last Gladiator. Win by Mangled Metal (or Tooth and Claw).
-Mulg the Ancient
-Earthborn Dire Troll
-Dire Troll Mauler

This game was the tournament finals, and for first place. I had never gotten this high in a tournament, and by this time my heart was pounding.

The start of this game was just incredible. We went two and a half or three rounds without making a dice roll, but I think by positioning and moving, the game was dictated by these rounds. The action started when my opponent popped Doomshaper's feat, charging Laris with Mulg, killing him. The Mauler charged the Forced Evo'd Pureblood, and couldn't do enough damage to kill him, because he needed to boost to hit with everything. The dice weren't terrible, but he needed some good rolls to kill the Pureblood. The Earthborn charged the Warpwolf Stalker, but was half an inch away from a successful charge (which, we agreed later, that he should have just pushed him with Mulg, and not worrying too much about Laris). I think that the Earthborn failing his charge was the hinge the battle rested on. Had he been successful, my opponent probably would have won.

The Stalker kills the Earthborn, the Feral kills the Mauler, and the Pureblood sprays Doomshaper (and my opponent forgot Protective Fit). Next turn, Mulg is only able to kill the Stalker, just out of reach of the Pureblood. To win the game, the Feral charges Mulg and finishes him off.

Overall, it was a great tournament, and I played against some amazing opponents. I had some of the most tactically stretching games that I had ever experienced, despite there only being a maximum of 5 models on the table! Many thanks to my opponents for the great games.eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-80203048020485402632011-03-25T13:15:00.000-07:002011-03-25T13:15:06.419-07:003.25.11 - Battle Engines!

With the release of No Quarter Issue #35, I really wanted to go through and analyze all of the new releases that were spoiled inside! I was so excited to see the rules of the Gun Carriage, and was pleasantly surprised as to how powerful the Gun Carriage is. And now, with today's Privateer Insider, we have more Battle Engine goodness!

First of all, we have the Khador Gun Carriage. The first thing that surprised me was that it has SPD 7! The second thing, and it too me a while to realize this, is that it has the Cavalry benefit! The rest is all icing on the cake. Two heavy cannons, with RNG 12, AOE 4, POW 14, leaving rough terrain? Awesome! POW 12 Mount with auto-knockdown? Even better.

So, a little bit of analyzation. This guy can charge, knockdown with the mount/impact attacks, then blow the crap out of pretty much anything in your path. With SPD 7, he's charging 10", something your Khador 'jacks will be jealous of. With his Heavy Cannons, the Gun Carriage can neutralize opponent heavy 'jacks by making a lot of rough terrain. Oh, and by the way, did I mention Gun Carriages can trample? At 9 points, 22 points of damage, and ARM 20, this guy is a steal.

There are two warcasters that come to mind when I think of helping the Gun Carriage. The first is Strakhov. He's got Occultation, which is surprisingly useful on a Battle Engine. Because your opponent can pretty much always draw line of sight to the Gun Carriage, it can almost always get shot at. Not so with Occultation. Next up is Sentry. Getting to shoot ANOTHER cannon shot at an advancing enemy? Yes, please. And finally, Strakhov's feat helps the Gun Carriage go from really fast to insanely fast. Under the feat, the Gun Carriage will charge 14"!

Second up is pVlad. Everyone loves Signs and Portents. The Gun Carriage obviously loves it too. Boundless Charge also gets him up their faster than normal.

For the most part, the rest of the warcasters (save for pButcher) only help warrior models or battlegroup, of which Battle Engines are neither.
Next up is the Retribution Arcantrik Force Generator! Now, let's review the front of the card before we move onto the back. SPD 4, RAT 7, ARM 19, with a RNG 14, POW 14. He'll be RAT 9 with the aiming bonus. 20 points of damage, FA 2, PC 10. When you put this guy side by side with the Gun Carriage, the front of the card just looks barren. But there's plenty on the back to satisfy.

First thing is that this guy can't be charged from the front arc. While this guy IS ARM 19, with 20 damage boxes, you don't want it to get charged by a group of Bane Thralls. Second, and what this guy has on the Gun Carriage, is that he can forfeit movement for aiming bonus AND +2 RNG. Also, if you have jacks shooting B2B with the Generator, and the Generator got the aiming bonus, those myrmidons also get +2 RNG.

Last of all are the attack types. The first increases the POW to 16 and gives the attack AOE 4. So, with this attack, we have a RAT 9, RNG 16, AOE 4, POW 16. That's what I like to see. Second up, we have Momentum, a la Trollbloods Thumper Crew. This can easily enable the assassination via ranged attacks from the rest of the army. Last of all, we have a simple Rapid Fire of d3+1 attacks. The good news is that none of these are special attacks or actions.

In terms of warcasters, Ravyn and Garryth come to mind. I think this guy will be a huge assassin piece in a Ravyn ranged assassination list by starting it all of with a knocked down caster. Then Ravyn charges into melee with the warcaster, Vortexing it up, then letting Mage Hunters (of any variety) finish of the warcaster, in case Ravyn couldn't do it herself.

Garryth has Apparition, which can give the Force Generator exactly what it needs to fix it's only weakness, it's SPD. Every turn, it can move 2" and still gain the aiming bonus.

Last up we have the concept art for the Circle Orboros Battle Engine, the Celestial Fulcrum! AHHH!! Circle is my main faction, and I was soooo excited to see this on the front page. If they can replicate that concept art in a model, that just might be the most impressive model that Privateer Press has.

I guess the biggest question on people's minds about this is: is it an attacking piece or a support piece? Is it going to be a giant Shifting Stone, or a super Geomancer.

My guess is that it's a little of both. I think it will be able to help your army, while being able to do a death star laser.

Well there you have it, the reviews of all the current information on Battle Engines!eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-80968665795180955502011-03-24T01:34:00.000-07:002011-03-24T01:34:55.309-07:00Tactics: Captain Kara Sloan

With hair that even Cloud Strife himself would be jealous of, Kara Sloan brings style to the rest of Cygnar. With her trusty sniper rifle, Spitfire, Sloan lays down loads of fire, and punishes her opponents for even getting close.

I have decided to continue my tactics articles by going through the warcasters/warlocks that are new to MkII. If I'm lucky, and don't run out of steam, I'll also go through ALL FOUR Minions warlocks!

First off, the statline! Her whole statline is pretty average, except for her RAT, at a very respectable 8. She also has fairly good defenses at DEF 16, ARM 14. Her ranged weapon is one of the best of any warcaster, competing against Seige and eSorscha (among others). RNG 14, POW 12 weapon master can really deal some serious damage to whoever she shoots. Turning the card over, we see that she has Arcane Precision, granting her some anti-stealth if she forfeits movement.

Spells
Sloan has a very respectable spell list, with a full 6 spells. Most of her helpful spells only affect one model or only her battlegroup.
Arcane Blast - One of two magic missile spells. Generally, Kara Sloan will go dozens of games without casting this spell. She has a lot of ways of taking out targets that would normally be targeted by this spell. However, it's there just in case.
Deadeye - Boosting the first ranged attack roll for a whole unit? Yes, please! Ideally, to get the most out of the spell, this should be cast on a unit, such as Long Gunners, Gun Mages, or Rangers. Because this spell isn't an upkeep spell, you can cast it on two or more units, if desired.
Dust to Dust - Another obligatory magic missile. See above.
Fire Group - RNG 18 Defenders? RNG 16 Hunters? Why not!?! This spell is likely to be most useful on the first few turns when your enemy is still moving up to engage.
Refuge - This spell is like Bushwack squared. It lets you move, shoot, then move again. While your primary target will most likely be Kara Sloan herself (to keep her safe), this will also work on a Defender or another 'jack that's gonna shoot.
Return Fire - This spell is only useful if you can predict who and what is gonna get shot. While it might be useful to cast if you have just one focus left, sometimes camping focus isn't a bad idea either. This might be worth using on a 'jack with a heavy ranged weapon, to discourage shooting it at all. The one drawback to this spell is that you have to get shot at before the effect to happen. Just remember, whether or not the opposing ranged attack hits, you still get to take a shot.

Feat - Firing Squad
This feat comes in two parts. The first part is giving boosted ranged attack rolls to EVERY friendly Faction model in the control. This means you don't have to worry about casting Deadeye. This also means that you only need to allocate focus for boosting damage (and taking extra shots if you have a Charger).

Part two essentially lets every model in the battlegroup, including Kara Sloan, take another ranged attack, providing all initial ranged attacks hit. And with all boosted attack rolls, most, if not all, shots will hit. It is because of this section of Sloan's feat that allows her to take three shots in one turn (with Reinholdt granting the third).

Warjacks
Ideally, Kara Sloan's battlegroup should consist of warjacks with ranged attacks to take advantage of her feat and Fire Group. Because the units that Sloan normally brings are good at taking out other infantry, I would look for ranged 'jacks that can take out heavies.

Defender - This warjack is nearly an auto-include with Sloan, based on the amount of synergy it has with her. At RNG 16, POW 15, this guy has the power to make a severe dent in warjacks and warbeasts every turn.

Hunter - Another jack that can do some serious damage to warjacks and warbeasts. This guy can lay down the hurt a little sooner than the Defender can, due to advance deploy and extended control range. Just remember, in order to be affected by the feat, the Hunter has to be in Kara's actual control area, not the extended control area.

Units
As mentioned above, there are several units that are benefitted greatly by Kara Sloan, namely the Long Gunners, Gun Mages, and the Rangers. They will generally fill the same role, but do it differently. This is just down to preference, in my opinion.

I think that a tarpit/melee unit would also be very useful to Kara Sloan's army, because the worst thing that your opponent can do to you is run to engage so you can't continue to shoot them. I'm inclined to suggest the combination of Sword Knights plus Journeyman Warcaster. With Defensive Line and Arcane Shield, the 10 man unit of Sword Knights will be sitting at ARM 19, for only 9 points. However, if you don't mind going outside of the Faction for them, Boomhowler and Co. are great for this role. They benefit from Deadeye, and if you take them with Captain Jonas Murdoch, they also benefit from the feat. They will also be 9 points, but you won't have the Arcane Shield. However, a 4+ tough is awesome.

Solos
Surprisingly, Kara doesn't need a lot of solo support to perform. First and foremost, however, is Reinholdt, who should have the title "Kara Sloan's warcaster attachment" instead of Gobber Speculator. It is this clever gobber that allows Sloan to take three shots with her rifle on her feat turn.

In terms of other useful solos, Eiryss, either form, is great for ensuring the assassination. Journeyman Warcaster is great if you need the +3 ARM. The Squire is great for that extra bit of control area and focus on the feat turn.

Example List

Captain Kara Sloan
-Defender
-Hunter
Journeyman Warcaster
Arcane Tempest Gun Mages
-The Dude
Black 13th
Rangers
Sword Knights (max)

This list incorporates a little of the strategies I have mentioned above. Using the Sword Knights as a tarpit/screening unit, the Gun Mages and Rangers can take down incoming infantry while the Defender and Hunter can soften up approaching warjacks and warbeasts.

If you are so inclined, you can swap out the Journeyman and the Sword Knights for Boomhowler and Co.

Well, thanks for reading! Stay tuned for the rest of the warcasters that were released with MkII!eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-39867186641069202652011-03-21T17:08:00.000-07:002011-03-21T17:08:54.844-07:00Battle Report: Kreuger the Stormlord v. In hindsight, it was probably worth it. Because of Kreuger's Storm Wall, both the Impaler and the Bomber were pretty much neutered for the rest of the game. Pureblood was able to get a spray on Janissa. Kreuger popped his feat, and pushed everyone back. I should have been a lot more aggressive this turn, and I think it cost me the game.
That's what happens on a Calandra feat turn. For some reason, I react to the feat turn by killing only the Impaler and the mounted Horthol, as opposed to the much more threatening large group of champions with accoutrement. With Calandra camping three fury for transferring, I decided to try and kill the Bomber, with no luck.

It was a really good game. My opponent, Alan, is always fun to play with. I can also attribute having a picture for every turn to him. So, in terms of tactics of the battle, I think that it was a good idea for Alan to try and absorb my feat turn, survive it, then annihilate my army with his feat turn. His trolls can take a lot more hits than my Circle can, so he played that right. It's hard to say whether or not it was worth sending the Long Riders after the stones, but in the end, it kept my Wolf Riders busy until the very last turn. If not, the Wolf Riders would have been threatening his back field really quick.

On my side of the table, I think I wasn't aggressive enough after my feat turn. I could have killed quite a bit of champions, and maybe a solo or two. But I decided to play defensively by using Megalith's animus, and assuming he couldn't get to me. However, a couple of Befuddles later, both Megalith and the Pureblood were dead. I could have killed some champs that ended up killing me, and possibly making Calandra's feat turn not as devastating. After losing that many resources, the game was just down hill from there. Note to self, killing champions is worth trading a beast or two for.

I'm sure he would have released the unedited version if he could have, but oh well.

However! There are a few little tidbits we can take from what he wrote. The one I think is the most important is that Minions are getting another warbeast! I sure hope that it's a Farrow beast.

Trollbloods get a unit, Circle gets a warbeast (wow, that's surprising /sarcasm), Skorne gets a ???, and Legion's entry was a warlock. Other than what was included, who knows what's coming out?

That's about all of the information that I can gleam out of today's Privateer Insider. Stay tuned for a battle report between Kreuger the Stormlord and Calandra Truthsayer, Oracle of the Glimmerwood!eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-12591015057604462832011-03-18T11:28:00.000-07:002011-03-18T11:28:30.040-07:00Warmachine: Wrath Cover Released! Along with the cover art, a small blurb on the scene on the cover was also included.
WOW! I sure can't wait for this bad boy to come out! There's quite a lot going on in the picture. We have the Cygnar Battle Engine, the Storm Strider, going head to head with the Cryx Battle Engine, the Wraith Engine. But there's more than that. According to the blurb in the Privateer Insider article (link above), there is also the new Cygnar warcaster, Constance Blaze, alongside the new Cygnar warjack, the Morrowan Gallant (character 'jack?). Blaze and Gallant are doing battle against the new Cryx warcaster, Lich Lord Scaverous, and "his" helljack Erebus.

Now that picture is just sheer beauty. There are so many things in that book to be excited about. Most importantly Battle Engines. However, new warcasters always bring new things to the table as well.

The only thing I have to speculate on from the blurb is: are the warjacks character 'jacks? According to the blurb, it says that Erebus, the new Cryx helljack, belongs to Scaverous. That has character warjack written all over it. However, it doesn't seem like Gallant belongs to anyone, despite being Morrowan with a seemingly Morrowan warcaster. Will there be two new warjacks per faction, one character, one not? It looks like that's how it's going to be. However, I think that there will be only warcaster per faction, with the only exception possibly being Retribution.

Well, there you have it. The cover to Warmachine: Wrath!eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-72960907047776792242011-03-18T01:01:00.000-07:002011-03-18T01:01:54.811-07:00Cryx Wraith Engine!!

The new Cryx Battle Engine, the Wraith Engine was featured on the front page of Privateer Press's website. Stay tuned for some speculations on the new Battle Engine!
Well, following the spoilers of the Retribution Battle Engine, the Arcantrik Force Generator (AFG), we can take some educated guesses as to what the statline and point value may be. In general, I think this guy looks faster than the AFG, most likely more dodgy, but less durable. This is the same trend that Cryx seems to follow with their 'jacks, with the Slayer chassis being DEF 13 ARM 17, compared to the Khador Juggernaut Chassis, being DEF 10 ARM 20.

So, here's my predicted statline:

SPD 5, STR 9, MAT 7 (or 8), RAT 6, DEF 12, ARM 18, CMD who cares?

No ranged attack.

Massive Claw x2
P+S 14
*attack Thresher

15 damage boxes, FA 2, PC 9-10
Back of card

*action - Incorporeal for one round.
*action - Place a AOE 5 cloud effect within 3".

Cull Soul, or a non-caster equivalent.

Also, as an aside, it is rumored that Battle Engines will have special rules, like Cavalry got when they came out. A few that were already spoiled were: can't be moved by a slam, push, throw, can't be placed, etc. It moves itself and that's it.

Well, there you have it. Another wildly baseless, and somewhat random, speculation on the new Cryx Wraith Engine.eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-51412515575772979102011-03-15T20:13:00.002-07:002011-03-15T22:52:49.825-07:003.15.11 New Release/Spoilers! Introducing Rocinante, the Nomad with a cannon (or a Mule with a sword)! Let the speculations run rampant! Unscrambled picture below!

Wow, that was a little more exclamation marks than I wanted. The first thing I thought when I read this guys name was, 'It has to be Damiano's character 'jack'. Apparently, Rocinante is the name of Don Quixote's horse. Anyway, on to the spectacularly baseless speculations.

So, from the picture, some things are quite blatantly obvious. He is carrying a Nomad sword, and he has a massive cannon strapped to his arm. Most likely, his sword will have the same P+S (which is 17) and reach. It looks rather ordinary, so I don't think the sword will have any special rules.

In terms of his cannon, I don't think it will be the same as the Mule's cannon, based on the fact that there is no powder kegs to boost range. Also, because Rocinante would have access to Snipe via pMagnus and the Arcane Tempest Gun Mages, the range on the cannon will likely be very short. Likely RNG 8, possibly RNG 10. Because it's a cannon, it will likely have AOE 3 or AOE 4. POW should be in the neighborhood of 14 or 15.

So without further adieu, my baseless speculation of his card!

SPD 5, STR 11, MAT 8, RAT 6, DEF 10, ARM 18

Sword P+S 17
Reach

Cannon RNG 10, ROF 1, AOE 3, POW 14
Continuous Fire Effect

In terms of special rules on the back of the card, I'm completely clueless. Hyper Aggressive? Murderous? Transforms into a Windmill? Your guess is as good as mine.eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212821191792003992.post-53773556396201071122011-03-15T00:40:00.002-07:002011-03-15T22:52:40.120-07:00Battle Report: Ashlynn D'Elyse v. Errants charge into the Nyss, missing all but one melee attacks, and missing with the Quick Work attack as well. The Redeemer went off on his shots, setting a lot of my guys on fire, including the Dude (Gun Mages UA; the origin of his title 'the Dude' is unknown). Reckoner pot shotted the Nomad doing minimal damage.

The Dude and a couple of Gun Mages die to fire. Ashlynn upkeeps both spells. 3 focus to Nomad. Ashlynn activates, feats, and kills a choir member. Nyss Hunters kill all but the Officer of the Errants unit. Mule advances and hits the Redeemer, critically hits, catching Feora in the AOE as well. Does minimal damage to the Redeemer, none to Feora. Gorman throws a rust bomb at the Reckoner. Aiyana Harms the Reckoner, Holt shoots the Reckoner twice, doing a few damage. Nomad charges, staying out of Rust, and kills the Reckoner. The remaining Gun Mages Thunderbolt the Avatar back into the forest (the picture is somewhat off, as we forgot that pushing into rough terrain halves the push distance).

Turn 3

Doh! I forgot to take pictures for both of our third turns! It was really intense. Hopefully you can visualize it based on description.

Feora drops Ignite, keeps Escort. The remaining Errant attempts to kill some Nyss, flubbing some rolls. The Repenter and the Redeemer kill the remaining Gun Mages and Gorman (which I realized after the fact that he's immune to fire). Redeemer also manages to set Ashlynn on fire, and does quite a bit of damage. Avatar runs to block charge lanes, and Ashlynn takes her Admonition move, to try and stay out of Feora's control (for the Caustic Presence). Feora moves up and Ashlynn is barely out! Feora feats anyway, getting one focus from the Mule on fire, thinking she'll need the extra focus to survive assassination.

Ashlynn upkeeps Quicken. 3 focus to Nomad. Mule attempts to shoot Feora, only hitting her with blast damage. Aiyana and Holt try to shoot/Harm, but all misses. Nyss Hunters hit a few times against Feora, but at dice minus eleven, they were hard pressed to do any damage. Nomad charges in, bringing her down to six health left! Decided to try and shoot with Ashlynn, hit (needing 12s), but not high enough on the damage roll to kill. Ended turn by casting Admonition.

Overall, it was a great game. Lots of laughs, many tense moments that depended on the dice. Whether playing a game with your friends or preparing for an upcoming tournament, list building is an important part of Warmachine and Hordes.

I have long believed that every model/unit in the Warmahordes lineup is good, feasible, and viable. Some, however, are better than others, but every model/unit can be powerful in the right hands. However, combining models effectively in a list can help them be more powerful than they normally would be.

First off, here's a couple of tips to help you start list building. If you have an iPhone or Android OS phone, iBodger is THE app for Warmahordes. However, if you don't have either of the phones, you could go to Forward Kommander online to do your list building.

Warcaster/Warlock

While the caster you use is a decision that's all up to you, the warcaster/warlock brings the most amount of personality to your army list. I tell a lot of people who are new to the game that, just by switching out your caster, you change the way the whole army plays.

When starting to build a list, I strongly suggest starting by choosing the caster you would like to use. This is just based on preference, desire, challenge, etc.

Fleshing Out Weaknesses and Filling Upkeep Slots

At this point, there's generally two things I try to do at the same time. First, I think of what the caster would be weak to, and try to cover up that weakness with other things in the army.

For example, pKreuger is widely known for his ability to clear out infantry. With his feat and his spells, there's no shortage of anti-infantry. Some things he would have trouble with would be 'jack/beast spam (aka heavy ARM), anti-magic, and enemy upkeeps. A few options that Circle has to deal with this is: any warpwolf (for heavy ARM), Lord of the Feast/Totem Hunter (for killing the anti-magic solos), and Druids (for preventing the army from being targeted by spells).

Second, I try and provide a target for all of the friendly upkeep spells the caster has. For example, Absylonia has three friendly upkeep spells (which she can upkeep for free if they are on a warbeast in her battlegroup). Two of those three upkeeps can only be put on warbeasts. As for Carnivore, you can put it on a warbeast or a unit, if you like. So, I would put Forced Evolution on an Angelius, Playing God on a Carnivean, and Carnivore on a Scythean.

Things to Prepare For

Heavy ARM - Generally, this means taking a heavy warbeast/warjack that is good at killing other heavies. This is pretty simple, as every faction has this.

Infantry - This means you should have something that can clear multiple infantry models per turn. There are plethora things that can do this. Whether it's a solo that has infantry killing power (Lord of the Feast comes to mind), or a large group of infantry, or a 'jack/beast with capable AOEs/sprays.

Stealth/High DEF - Blast damage, things that auto hit, slamming things through them. Sprays get around stealth, as well as Eyeless Sight. Generally, high DEF and stealth models have low, low ARM.

Incorporeal - Some model with magical weapon or a magic ability is good enough to take care of these guys. Some factions are lucky enough to have a model that can give out magical weapon.

Things to Take
While not everything listed below are required, they are general strategies that can be deployed.

Tarpit - A tarpit is a unit that is capable of a couple of things. First, they can take a lot of punishment. Second, they block charge lanes. Third, and least important of the three, is deal damage.

Softeners - These are models that deal a little damage to warjacks/warbeasts, casters, heavy infantry on their way up to engaging in melee. Most of the time, this means a unit of people with ranged attacks. This could also mean artillery.

Finisher - Generally, a finisher is the model that kills the caster. While you won't be playing caster kill every game because of scenarios, finishers have a very high chance of getting the caster kill, if you can get them in range.

Flanker - A flanker would most of the time be a cavalry model, but it could be anything with really good mobility. Generally, a flanker should be able to get on the extreme flank of your opponents army and pressure your opponent to move in a certain direction. They could possibly score a caster kill, but that's not their main purpose. They force your opponent to devote forces (away from their main force) to kill the flanker, or move away from it (and hopefully closer to your finishers).

Well, I think that's all for now. Thanks for reading, and feel free to post comments!eJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18328361094758834634noreply@blogger.com0
